The Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Trade accompanied by the Principal Secretary for East Africa Affairs fill their registration forms during the 32nd Extra-ordinary Meeting of the Council of Ministers.

The meeting’s significance was evidenced by the presence of eminent persons from East Africa and COMESA region. The Commissioner for Peace and Security from African Union Commission (AUC) and representatives from United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), United

States of America (USA) and International CGR (ICGR) were also present.

The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from United Republic of Tanzania who in his opening remarks pointed out the need for the EAC partner states along with other countries to intervene before the situation degenerated further. The chair reminded the council that each country has an obligation as per the EAC treaty to ensure there is peace, security and stability within region. Currently over 50,000 Burundi nationals are taking refuge in Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda with frequent cases of violence being reported in various places.

. It is expected the decisions arrived at the deliberations will inform the 13th Extra-ordinary Summit of the Heads of States scheduled for today, 13th May, 2015. The Summit is thus expected to provide a regional intervention with the support of other countries.
